ARTIST'S STATEMENT
Nicholas Coley’s painting has its roots in the ethos of a small school in the South of France. For Coley, “L’école Marchutz was a great place to get rooted in a concrete perspective of the fundamentals and a format of painting from real life.” Twenty years later, he still paints on location, finding himself in relation to a place and seeking unity with his surroundings. Only now he’s exchanged the South of France for the open-air adventure that is the San Francisco Bay Area.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Born in Connecticut and raised in California, Coley studied art at L'école des Beaux Arts in Aix-en-Provence and the Marchutz School of Art in Le Tholonet, France. He holds a BA in Painting from Evergreen State College in Washington and has traveled and painted throughout Europe, selling his work on the Charles Bridge in Prague, in Campo San Polo in Venice, and from the fields outside Duras, France. He returned to the Bay Area in 2000 after painting in Seattle and Portland.
