RUBEENA RATCLIFFE: RETURN TO FORM
In this body of work, Vancouver-based artist Rubeena Ratcliffe distills memory, domestic space, and imagined narratives into layered abstractions marked by rich color, geometric structure, and intricate surface detail. Informed by her background in architecture, the paintings evoke shifting, dreamlike environments that balance solidity and transformation.

Amy Donaldson at the northblock hotel
North Block Hotel, 6757 Washington St, Yountville, Napa County, CA
North Block Restaurant becomes a living canvas. Join us for the unveiling of a new ongoing art series and retail partnership at North Block Hotel & Restaurant, launched in collaboration with SLATE Contemporary Gallery and Erica Tanov Atelier. This evolving creative partnership will bring a rotating roster of artists and makers into the space over time, with the latest being SLATE Artist Amy Donaldson.
Amy Donaldson’s passion for painting comes through in every brush stroke. Her influences span the centuries, including European Romanticism, Impressionism, Abstract Expressionism, and contemporary street art. Nonetheless, she has created a signature style that connects the past with the present with a vibrant sense of immediacy and freshness. Many paintings burst with joy and light from the heavenly realm, while others are cloaked in a more intimate softness, a sense of history, or an indefinable mystery.

SLATE CONTEMPORARY GALLERY INTRODUCES 5 NEW ARTISTS AT THE SAN FRANCISCO ART FAIR AT FORT MASON APRIL 16–19
SLATE Contemporary Gallery is thrilled to be working with several new artists who will be introduced to Bay Area audiences at the San Francisco Art Fair at Fort Mason from April 16-19.
- Oakland artist Jet Martinez is well-known for dozens of hand-painted murals he has created across the Bay Area, done in his unique signature style that draws on Mexican folk art traditions. SLATE is delighted to bring his studio painting practice into focus, featuring two works at the fair from his Arbolito series—paintings on panel originally created for a solo show at MACLA in San Jose last year.
- Rubeena Ratcliffe is an abstract painter based in Vancouver, Canada. Her work will be featured in a solo exhibition at SLATE Contemporary Gallery from April 09-May 30, with one piece concurrently on view at the fair. Trained originally as an architect, Rubeena’s paintings on canvas focus on compositional relationships between shapes, color, values, and the dynamics of space.
- Austin photographer Stephanie Duprie Routh had her Bay Area debut last summer in a solo exhibition at Minnesota Street Projects, produced by Fox Projects. She has since joined SLATE Contemporary, and has two works from her Daydream in Memories of Youth series in A New Day, currently on view in Oakland through April 4. A large-format figurative photo titled Julia Fierce will be on view at the fair.
- Improvisational San Francisco painter Jen Garrido will be represented with an abstract painting on canvas from 2024 as a precis to her upcoming innaugural solo exhibition, which will feature a new body of 2026 work at SLATE Contemporary Gallery from June 5–July 4.
- Last, but not least, SLATE is pleased to present Fort Worth, TX, artist Aubree Dale’s work to Bay Area audiences for the first time. A self-described “Maximalist painter,” Aubree builds her paintings up in layers, fluctuating between abstraction and representation to create both simple and complex worlds for exploration.
SLATE will also present work by several artists who have been working with the gallery for some time, including Hannah Franco, Patrick DeAngelis, Peter St. Lawrence, Suzanne Frazier, and Holly Wong.
