Usha Shukla creates large abstract paintings that are inspired by her love for nature and the vibrant colors of the Indian countryside where she grew up.
Shukla has a unique process of mark making. Instead of conventional tools like brushes and palette knives, she moves the paint on wood panels using an air blower. This technique allows her to create paintings that distill the light, intense colors, and constant movement in nature. The final visual is pure, ethereal, and cosmic, with no physical references.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Shukla was born in New Delhi but moved to the Bay Area in 1996. She has an MFA in Painting from the Academy of Art University in San Francisco, and her work can be found in many public and private collections, locally and nationally, including the East County Hall of Justice in Dublin, CA; San Francisco General Hospital; Sutter Health California Pacific Medical Center in San Francisco; and Boston Children's Hospital. In 2015, Shukla received the Clyde & Co Art Award for Emerging Artists in San Francisco.
