Scott Idleman

“I create imaginary worlds inspired in part by real world phenomena including aerial views, microscopic imagery, astronomy, 1960s psychedelia, Americana quilts, and contemporary Aboriginal art in my paintings and drawings. Trained as a graphic designer, I wanted to get back to the non-digital alchemy of paint, ink, and texture. Mining my childhood obsession with doodling and mark-making, I have developed a painting technique of colorizing gesso then drawing with it to build up texture that creates shadow and depth. Additionally, the raised texture can be filled with fluid color.

Utilizing reductive simple dots, circles, dashes, and line, the comprehensive theme of all my work is connectivity. Because of technology, the world is more connected than ever before and my attempt is to convey those flows, collisions, overlaps, and missed connections.”

Scott Idleman was born in Stamford, Connecticut in 1964. After moving with his family to rural Mississippi, then central Illinois, he attended Kansas City Art Institute where he received a BFA in Graphic Design with minors in fibers, photography, and painting. Idleman moved to New York City after graduation where he pursued graphic design work for design studios, fashion ad agencies, Egg Magazine published by Malcolm Forbes, and Sony Music. After five years in New York, Idleman relocated to San Francisco in 1992. He consulted many years as an art director and designer for Levi Strauss & Co. and started his own design studio, Blink, which specializes in eye-catching designs for the book publishing, apparel, music event, and tech industries.

In 2006, Idleman began getting back his fine art roots and away from the digital realm, experimenting with texture and motion in gesso and acrylic works on canvas and intricate drawn works on paper. Scott Idleman currently lives and maintains his studio practice in the vibrant San Francisco Mission district.
