“Painting makes me pause and look at the world. My aerial landscapes of American farmland and still lifes of everyday things are inspired by my surroundings. I can explore the countryside on my laptop, or simply open the kitchen cupboard. From miles above, we see our farmland as a spectacle of color, pattern, and infinite complexity. In a still life, we are asked to forge a narrative about how the different objects relate to one another. Fields of crops and breakfast dishes shape how we define our world and quietly reveal what is important to us. My art education has been self-directed over the course of my life. My first memories are of drawing: on the walls, myself, and my sister’s dolls. Fortunately, my mother was an artist. She got me art supplies and enrolled me in classes to steer my energies in a positive direction. She instilled in me the value of making things. Curtains should be sewn, pies baked, and vegetables grown in the backyard. I produced my own comic book series in grade school, and sold my art projects in middle school. In high school, I painted murals in the windows of a local restaurant(I was paid in cheeseburgers.) Although I got a bachelor’s degree in biology, and had a career in advertising, I always studied art—taking art history and studio classes wherever I happened to be. In 2007, I earned an associate degree of fine art at College of Marin. I have been dedicated to painting, exhibiting, and selling my work since creating my studio seven years ago. My work shows regularly in Marin and San Francisco, and is collected across the country.” -Kate Barrengos
