Irene Nelson is a painter, photographer, printmaker and ceramicist based in Oakland, CA. Nelson’s art practice had its beginnings when as a college student in Buffalo, New York she received her first camera as a gift from her father. Following an interest in documentary film, Nelson found her way to Berkeley, California after graduation where she began to use video as a way to tell the politically influential stories of the time. Nelson went on to establish a successful 30 year career as an independent Graphic Designer specializing in the Healthcare and Biotech fields.
A recent studio renovation has allowed Nelson the opportunity to grow a painting practice that had begun several years ago after an artist residency at Kala Institute in Berkeley, CA, and many other local art classes.
In her work which includes paintings, photo etchings and monoprints, Nelson conveys the inquisitiveness, sense of adventure and promise of something better ahead that has defined her life. Nelson’s zesty color palette and pared down shapes tumbling confidently through an easeful space combine to create a dynamic, hopeful environment. Nelson’s recent ceramic work has begun an exploration of her shapes in three dimensional form.
