David Ruth

David Ruth considers himself a painter who happens to work in the medium of glass, rather than a glass craftsman, although the craftsmanship and technique required to create cast glass works at this scale (and even larger) is considerable. While David’s visual language is abstract, he admits that it is inspired by monumental ice formations (he traveled to Antarctica on a grant from the National Science Foundation in 2005) and the natural beauty of color and floating forms under the sea. The title of this piece, Maina, like the others in this body of work, derives from the name of an island in the South Pacific.
David has a MFA from the California College of the Arts. He has completed several of large scale architectural commissions for public spaces and private homes, and has exhibited throughout the west coast and Japan. This particular piece was exhibited in his solo show at the Peninsula Museum of Art in Burlingame, and the Museum of Art in Los Gatos.
